12V Lighting Problems
When you plug into your car and various rear lights don't work it can be the
start of all sorts of trouble, normally when I see it it is at 5 o clock on a
Friday afternoon! There are many different reasons for this the most common
are:
- 12N plug
- Light Clusters
- Bulbs
- Wiring
12N plug This is the first place to start, if the plug hasn't been
changed for several years, which is normally the case, then check the inside of
the plug. The worst problem is rust,if there is rust inside the plug and the
earth has either stopped working completely or even worse has joined with any of
the positive connections then you will never get the lights to work! Change
the plug using the directions above, hopefully this will solve all your
problems,if like most of the cases on Friday afternoons it will just illuminate
the problem and you can move on to the next one.
Light Clusters If these are old and rusty then they will need to be
replaced.Sometimes a good clean of the terminals will solve the problem. Before
you do this make sure you unplug, if you touch the terminals the fuse will blow
in the car slowing down your getaway! Check for breakage's of the clusters
anywhere also check the electrical terminals for corrosion. The earth connection
is the most important if your lights are doing all sorts of weird and wonderful
things then it will be a doggy earth, give it a clean and see what happens.
Bulbs This is the most obvious thing to check sometimes they can
look ok but aren't, the only way to really check them is to use a multimeter and
do a continuity test, if you know what that is you have probably worked that out
already! or fit new ones anyway.
Wiring This is the worst thing to try and sort out sometimes I have
spent 2 hours going through the whole system to eventually find one broken
scotch lock. You need a multymeter to be able to do anything at all then it is
just a case of starting from the front, finding where you have 12v's and where
you haven't and working your way to the problem. Good luck!
